Stanley is fascinated by the fact that Israel is such a small country yet teeming with contrasts and diversity. This fascination is reflected in his artwork, each piece portraying a different facet and a different walk of life in Israel. In the oeuvre as a whole, these diverse images are drawn together revealing the essence and spirit of the land of Israel. Characterized by silhouetted figures set against white, pastel or brightly colored backgrounds, these seemingly minimalistic silk screens are in fact extremely detailed, conveying a sense of depth and movement. Vibrant and multifaceted, they mirror the artist's continual captivation with and profound connection to the land and people of Israel.

Set amidst Old Jaffa's cobblestoned alleyways, Studio Handelman is the quintessential combination of old and new. It was once a ruin that Rose and Stanley Handelman transformed into a modern art gallery. After two years of renovations, which were in themselves an artistic endeavor, Studio Handelman opened on August 5, 1973. Self-taught artist Stanley and his wife Rose, have lived and worked in this highly inspiring setting for more than thirty years. Over the years the Handelmans have traveled extensively, exploring Israel's myriad landmarks, lifestyles and landscapes. From ancient towns, Biblical sites and archaeological excavations; to modern cities, secular as well as orthodox and ultra-orthodox communities, kibbutzim and moshavim (agricultural communal settlements); from the Negev to the countryside of the north - every corner of this beautiful land has captured the couple's heart, mind and imagination

THIRTY-SIX YEARS!

That's how long we have been operating Studio Handelman in this same restored building of ours. We opened on August 5, 1973 and a mere two months later, Israel was attacked by Syria and Egypt in an all out war -- the Yom Kippur War. These have been eventful years both for the country and for us.
